Meet Twinkie Chan; the lady who needs no formal introduction, so I will simply present her with my ever growing admiration!  Of course you know that she is world famous, uber cute, and the amazingly talented creator of yummy crochet wears and goodies, but for me Twinkie is the fervent love child of pink cupcakes and glitzy-glitter, and I can’t help but to guzzle down her smart, sweet flair!

To put it mildly, I’m totally gripped by her! She’s an icon, and I am always excited to see what new design she’s fashioned, or where she’s been published! So, I love that she blogs frequently enough for me to get my “Twinkie” fix! I really like that her posts are not only about craft endeavors but will include her world travels, San Francisco life, craft fairs, baking, art shows, fashion, nail art, and videos!  She writes in a way that is fun, and personable, and every post felt like it was written just for me – so, if you’re not already utterly enchanted by this girl, you should be! She is a pop-culture icon, and likely the most referenced and celebrated crochet designer to date. Period.

Twinkie has been professionally published and reference more times than I can recall in a piece of this size, so I’ll just post the few that I have actually seen in person, and am most impressed with: She made the cover of Mollie Makes (issue 18), and she had a full page ad in Nylon magazine (February 2013).

Her success seems to have no boundaries, and her resume reads a lot like my personal dream board (yes, I want to be like Twinkie when I grow up!): Check out her slew of FREE crochet patterns designed for Michael’s, her first crochet book  won the 2011 About.com readers choice award for Best DIY Fashion Book, her Yummy You Shop features “Twinkie style” goods and gifts,  and she’s got her own YouTube channel that I highly recommend you check out, like today! Check out my favorite Twinkie Video, and tell me that’s not clever and amazing!

Twinkie and I collaborated to bring you the most amazing of giveaways: I will be donating 1 FREE Blog Ad Space to one fan, and she will be giving a Signed Copy of her book Twinkie Chan’s Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies, AND 1 FREE PDF Crochet Pattern to 3 fans! There isn’t anything I don’t love about Twinkie, but my favorite thing about her is that she is absolutely authentic; an organic style that is revered for the young-at-heart, energetic, colorful nature she embodies, and you can find more to love by following her right here:

Because she’s so fantastic, Twinkie was kind enough to chat with me for our Design Wars community, enjoy!

Design Wars (DW): Define success; What do you hope to accomplish?

Twinkie Chan (TC): I feel successful when I’m doing something I love, that also makes other people happy, and that also pays my bills! I think I have the first two nailed down pretty well. The third can sometimes be an uphill battle, but that is the whole trick to turning your hobby or art into your business!

DW: What are the best words of wisdom you can provide to hopeful / new crochet vendors?

TC: a) If possible, find your own crochet/design voice. You’ll stand out more easily and people will learn to recognize your work. b) Don’t undersell yourself. Quality handmade can sometimes take time, and your time and talent have worth!

DW: What is your most recent accomplishment?

TC: I’m really proud of my brand “Yummy You!”‘s crochet scarf collaboration with Sanrio that is now available in my Yummy You! store as well as Sanrio.com. It’s pretty dreamy, and I hope people like it!

DW: Do you have a design board for inspiration?

TC: I don’t typically maintain a single design board. If I’m inspired by a certain food, I’ll collect some photos of that food, but it’s not really a mood board like I’ve seen other designers make. I do, however, have 3 collages I made for a meeting, which actually came in handy!

DW:  Which of your crochet pieces do you feel best represent you?

TC: 1) Cupcake scarf. I think people came to know me for these, and I love cupcakes, and I love wearing scarves! 2) Cheeseburger fingerless mitts. I like that they are kind of goofy and offbeat, which I definitely am! 3) Cake Tissue Cozies. These also really represent what I like to achieve with my work: cute, crocheted, and useful! They also border that murky line between granny, kitsch, and cool!
